Mercury Quicksilver Nylon Spacer — Part Number 23-13127
Brand: Mercury Quicksilver | Condition: New Old Stock (NOS)
Genuine Mercury Quicksilver nylon spacer, part number 23-13127, for the driveshaft housing on Mercury and Mariner single-cylinder outboards of 3.9, 4 and 4.5 horsepower. It sits at reference 16 in the Drive Shaft Housing Assembly group — the midsection between the powerhead and the gearcase. A nylon spacer in this position does quiet, unglamorous work: it sets a dimension and keeps two metal surfaces from bearing directly on one another, which is why Mercury specified nylon rather than steel or brass. It is also the kind of part that gets lost on a bench, crumbles when a decades-old motor comes apart, or simply does not come back out of the housing in one piece. Small, cheap, and the reassembly stops without it.
Condition Details
New Old Stock — never installed. This spacer has been in dealer or distributor inventory and is sold exactly as it came off the shelf. Nylon is stable in dry indoor storage, so an unused spacer is dimensionally as it left the factory, with none of the compression set, swelling or embrittlement that a part pulled out of a fifty-year-old motor will have. Packaging may show shelf wear, dust, handling creases, faded or discolored printing, old price stickers, or shelf dirt from long-term storage, and Mercury small parts were frequently broken out of bulk by dealers, so the bag may be a dealer repack rather than a sealed factory bag. The spacer may carry light storage discoloration. Please see the photos for the exact contents of the package.

A note on the part number: the “23” prefix is Mercury’s internal category code covering bushings, bearings and spacers — it is not a reference or quantity. The part appears in catalogues as 23-13127 and as plain 13127; both are the same item.
Mercury does not publish dimensional data for this spacer — no outside diameter, bore or thickness appears in any catalogue or retail listing. If you need a measurement to compare against the spacer you are replacing, message me and I will put calipers on it and send you the actual figures before you buy.
Superseded & Cross Reference Part Numbers
- Mercury 23-13127
- Mercury 13127
- Quicksilver 23-13127
There is no supersession on this part — it remains the current and only factory number for this application.
Features

- Fits a long production run of Mercury’s single-cylinder small outboards
- Sold individually, so you buy exactly what you need
- The sort of small part that holds up an entire reassembly when it is missing
Application
Mercury and Mariner single-cylinder outboards. Taken directly from Mercury’s own factory “Where Used” data, by serial range — which is the authoritative way to confirm this part:
| Model | Serial range |
|---|---|
| Merc 39 (1 cyl.) | 1655013 – 2498135 |
| Merc 40 (1 cyl.) | 2498136 – 3296136 |
| 4 HP (1 cyl., product of USA) | 5595532 & up |
| 4 HP (1 cyl., product of USA) | 7143688 & up |
| 4 HP (1 cyl., product of USA) | 8068065 & up |
| 4 HP (1 cyl., product of USA) | 9258281 & up |
| 4.5 HP (1 cyl.) | 5595532 & up |
| 4.5 HP (1 cyl.) | 7147238 & up |
| 4.5 HP (1 cyl.) | 8068065 & up |
| 4.5 HP (1 cyl.) | 9258281 & up |
Reading those model numbers: on vintage Mercury outboards the model designation is approximately ten times the horsepower, so Merc 39 is a 3.9 HP motor and Merc 40 is a 4 HP motor — not 39 and 40 horsepower. Mercury never built a single-cylinder 39 HP outboard, and several parts retailers print these designations as horsepower, which causes no end of confusion. In horsepower terms this spacer covers 3.9, 4 and 4.5 HP single-cylinder motors.
Confirm by serial number, not by horsepower. Mercury organised parts for these motors by serial range, and the table above is the factory data. Find your engine’s serial number on the transom bracket, match it against the ranges, and you will know. If you send me your model and serial number I will check it for you before you buy.
Why Choose Mercury Quicksilver?
Quicksilver is Mercury Marine’s own parts brand, so a Quicksilver part is the factory part in Mercury’s own packaging, to Mercury’s own specification. On a spacer that specification is entirely dimensional — thickness, bore and outside diameter — and those three numbers are the whole function of the part. Substituting a hardware-store washer of roughly the right size changes a clearance somewhere in the driveshaft housing, and in an assembly where the driveshaft, water tube and shift linkage all have to line up, “roughly right” tends to show up later as a leak, a bind or a shift that will not quite engage. Mercury chose nylon for a reason too: it will not corrode against aluminium and will not gall. For a few dollars, the correct part is simply the right answer.
