Hastings Lube Oil Filter, Spin-On — Part Number LF598

Brand: Hastings | Condition: New Old Stock (NOS)

Genuine Hastings lube oil filter, part number LF598. A large high velocity dual-flow spin-on with an M92 × 2 metric thread and a 118.3 mm body, replacing International / Navistar 1842543C1. From original dealer stock, in Hastings packaging marked OIL FILTER, never fitted.

Condition Details

New Old Stock. The filter is new and unused, never installed and never exposed to oil. As with all NOS stock, the original Hastings box or wrapper may show shelf wear, dust, discoloration, crushed corners, or age-related dirt. The part is sold as new; the packaging is sold as-is. The can is undented, the thread is clean and undamaged, the sealing gasket is supple with no cracking or set, and the media is clean and dry.

Overall height is not stated above and that is deliberate. The one source publishing a length for this filter gives two figures that disagree with each other by a factor of eight, so neither can be trusted. We will measure the filter and give you the actual height on request — send us a message and we will take it off the part in hand. We would rather leave a field blank than publish a number we know is unreliable.

⚠ Please confirm your housing takes a threaded spin-on

Fleetguard also uses the number LF598, for a completely different filter — a bare cartridge element of about 97 mm diameter with a 34 mm bore and no thread at all. The two are not interchangeable.

This listing is for the Hastings LF598: a threaded spin-on canister with an M92 × 2 thread, 118.3 mm across. If your housing takes a drop-in cartridge rather than a screw-on canister, this is not your filter — message us and we will help you identify the right one.

Superseded & Cross Reference Part Numbers

  • Hastings: LF598
  • International / Navistar / IHC: 1842543C1

No Baldwin, Fleetguard, WIX or Donaldson equivalent is published against the Hastings LF598 in any source we can reach. The Hastings LF line is being progressively retired following Parker’s acquisition of the brand, and the cross-reference tables for the less common numbers have been thinned out along with it.

Please note: the number LF598 is also used by Fleetguard for an unrelated cartridge element. Any LF598 cross-reference list you find online that mentions Perkins, Massey Ferguson, Claas or Ford tractors refers to the Fleetguard part, not this one. Do not use those crosses for this filter.

If your records show a Navistar or International number alongside LF598, send it to us and we will verify the match rather than guess at it.

Features

  • Genuine Hastings, a long-established heavy duty engine filter manufacturer, now part of the Parker and Baldwin group
  • Dual-flow construction. A dual-flow lube filter passes part of the oil through a fine bypass stage while the rest goes through the full-flow stage, which gives finer filtration without restricting the flow the engine needs. It is a more sophisticated design than a plain full-flow filter and not something a generic substitute replicates
  • M92 × 2 thread — a large metric thread used on heavy duty engine mounts. Stated plainly, because it is what determines whether this filter fits
  • Carries the International / Navistar 1842543C1 equivalence
  • Thin to absent current availability. This number is not stocked by the major filter distributors and carries no published aftermarket equivalent. Original stock is the practical route when your records call for it
  • A lube filter is among the cheapest items in an engine’s maintenance schedule and the only thing standing between the oil pump and every bearing surface in the engine

Application

Fits applications calling for Hastings LF598 or International / Navistar 1842543C1.

Important — please read before ordering. No application list is published for this number in any current catalogue. Order by part number only, and confirm the thread and the body diameter against your housing.

Please match LF598 or 1842543C1 against your engine’s service manual, your own parts records, or the filter you are removing. Do not order this filter because it looks like the one in your hand — large dual-flow spin-ons differ in thread pitch and diameter, and an M92 × 2 thread will not engage a housing cut for anything else.

If you are working from a service record and want help confirming this is your item, send us a message with your engine or vehicle make, model and year, and any other number you have, and we will check it with you before you buy. If what you need is a filter of specific dimensions rather than this specific Hastings number, tell us what you need and we will measure this one and tell you honestly whether it matches.

Why Choose Hastings?

Hastings Filters built lube filtration for heavy duty and industrial engines for decades, and the dual-flow design is a good example of why the original part matters. Oil filtration is a trade-off: fine media catches more but restricts flow, and an engine starved of oil fails faster than one running slightly dirty oil. A dual-flow filter resolves that by splitting the oil between a full-flow path sized for the pump and a bypass path through much finer media, so the sump is progressively cleaned while the bearings always get their volume. Getting that split right is engineering, not assembly. A single-stage filter of the same dimensions will thread on and will not do the same job.

Returns

Returns accepted within 30 days through the eBay return request process. The part must be returned in the condition in which it was sent, unused and with the media clean and dry. Please confirm the M92 × 2 thread and the 118.3 mm body diameter against your housing before ordering, and note that Fleetguard’s LF598 is a different filter entirely.

Thank you for looking at this listing. We are a small parts business and we work hard to describe every part accurately, including the condition of NOS packaging and the limits of what the factory data tells us. If anything about this part is not what you expected when it arrives, please contact us first and give us the chance to make it right. We will always work with you.

If you have a part number you are hunting for and do not see it listed, send us a message — our inventory is considerably larger than what is posted at any given moment, and we are happy to check the shelves for you.
