Drive Rite V-Belt — Part Number L479

Brand: Drive Rite | Condition: New Old Stock (NOS)

Genuine Drive Rite fractional horsepower V-belt, part number L479, in the standard 4L790 size — 1/2 inch top width by 79 inches outside length. Drive Rite is Dayco’s industrial belt line, so this belt comes out of Dayco’s power transmission catalogue rather than from an unbranded import supplier. It is a wrapped-construction FHP belt with a 40 degree sidewall angle, which is the workhorse size and section used on light-duty drives everywhere: lawn and garden equipment, pumps, blowers, compressors, shop machinery, fans and HVAC units, and general industrial drives running 1/2 inch sheaves.

This belt is marked with two numbers you may be searching for. L479 is the Drive Rite and Dayco designation and 48X790 is Carlisle’s — both are the same 1/2 inch by 79 inch belt, and so is the industry-standard 4L790. If your machine’s manual, nameplate or old belt shows any of those, this is your belt.

Condition Details

New Old Stock — never installed, never run on a drive. This belt has been in distributor or dealer inventory and is sold exactly as it came off the shelf. Packaging may show shelf wear, dust, handling creases, faded printing, old price stickers, or shelf dirt from long-term storage, and the belt may be a dealer repack rather than a sealed sleeve.

An honest word about rubber: V-belts are a rubber product, and unlike a brass fitting or a steel washer they do not sit on a shelf indefinitely without changing. This belt has been stored indoors, out of sunlight, and it is unused with no running hours on it — no cord fatigue, no glazed sidewalls, no cracking from heat cycling, and none of the stretch a used belt carries. What I will not claim is that a belt off a long-term shelf is identical to one made last month. It is inspected before shipping for sidewall cracking, hardening and set, and I will not ship one that has gone off. If you have any concern, message me and I will flex it, look it over again and tell you exactly what I see. Please see the photos for the belt’s actual condition.

How the numbering works, in case you are matching an old belt: in the standard FHP designation 4L790, the “4L” is the cross section and the “790” is the outside length in tenths of an inch — so 79.0 inches. Drive Rite and Dayco write the same belt as L479, and Carlisle writes it as 48X790. The classical equivalent, A77, is measured by inside length instead, which is why 77 and 79 both describe this belt.

Superseded & Cross Reference Part Numbers

The 4L790 size is made by every major belt manufacturer, so the equivalent numbers are extensive:

  • Drive Rite L479
  • Dayco 4L790 / L479
  • Dayton 4L790
  • Carlisle 48X790
  • Gates 2790 (Truflex) and 6879 (PoweRated)
  • Browning 4L790
  • Goodyear 74790 / 4L790
  • Bando 4L790
  • Continental AG 4L790
  • Optibelt 4L790
  • Mitsuboshi 4L790
  • MBL 4L790
  • Timken 4L790R
  • A and I Products A-4L790
  • AC Delco 2790
  • NAPA 2790
  • Carquest 2790
  • Brunswick 12-400329
  • Classical A-section equivalent: A77

Note on the classical cross: A77 and 4L790 are not identical belts even though they cross. The 4L section is the fractional-horsepower profile at 5/16 inch thick; the classical A section is slightly thicker. Both are 1/2 inch across the top and are commonly interchanged on light-duty drives, but if your equipment specifically calls for a classical A-section belt on a heavily loaded drive, order the A77.

Features

  • Genuine Drive Rite belt from Dayco’s industrial line
  • Wrapped construction — fabric cover protects the cord from abrasion in the sheave
  • 40 degree sidewall to match standard FHP sheaves
  • Correct 1/2 inch by 79 inch size, verified against the factory specification
  • Unused: no stretch, no glazing, no cord fatigue, no set from sitting on a pulley
  • One of the most widely used belt sizes in light-duty power transmission — it fits an enormous range of equipment
  • Inspected for condition before shipping, with photos of the actual belt

Application

General light-duty power transmission on drives using 1/2 inch FHP sheaves with a nominal 79 inch belt path. The 4L790 size appears across lawn and garden equipment, agricultural implements, pumps, air compressors, blowers and fans, HVAC air handlers, shop and woodworking machinery, and industrial drives generally. The Brunswick cross reference above indicates marine use as well.

Confirm by size or by part number, not by machine. A fractional horsepower V-belt is specified by its section and length rather than by equipment model, so the reliable checks are these:

  1. Your manual or nameplate calls for 4L790, L479, 48X790, A77, 2790, or any of the numbers listed above.
  2. Your old belt is marked with one of those numbers.
  3. You measure it: a 1/2 inch top width and a 79 inch outside circumference. Lay the old belt flat and measure around the outside, or measure the sheave centres and wrap if the old belt is gone.

If you are not sure, message me with the numbers off your old belt or your machine, and I will help you work out whether this is the right size.

Why Choose Drive Rite?

Drive Rite is Dayco’s industrial belt line, and Dayco has been making power transmission belts for over a century, supplying both original equipment and aftermarket drives. On a V-belt the things you are paying for are not visible from outside: the tensile cord and how evenly it is tensioned during manufacture, the rubber compound’s grip and heat resistance, and the dimensional consistency of the sidewall angle. A belt with unevenly tensioned cords runs out of round and vibrates; a belt a fraction off on sidewall angle only contacts the sheave at the edges, which is how a cheap belt chews through a drive and itself in a season. Those are exactly the areas where budget belts economise, because nobody can see it in the package. A Drive Rite belt in the correct size, unused, is the straightforward way to not think about any of that.
